VWML Dance and Tunes Index

All material acquired by VWML which contains references or descriptions of dances will be referenced in its Dance/Tune Index. Scan of sample dance notation Scan of sample tune notation The same applies for any tunes not directly associated with songs. Previously, dances were kept separate from tunes, mainly because many dances could be performed to a number of different tunes so long as it was the right type, e.g. a 48 bar reel or jig; or because many tunes have no specific relationship to dances and exist on their own. Many dances are of course published with tunes, some of which bare the same names. Nevertheless, two separate card indexes were developed up until 1995 for dances and tunes written or printed, while a single dance/tune card index was created for sound recordings.

Since 1995, all references to dances and tunes have been included in a single electronic database, including sound recordings. The index is literal, meaning that we have followed the spellings of dance and tune titles exactly as they appear, with only some attempt to bring similar or identical versions together under one uniform title. That is work has still to be done.

Hosted here on VWML Online is a complete retro-conversion of the card index to dances for written and published materials, plus all dances and tunes added electronically since 1995 from all written and sound formats. Still to be added is the card index for tunes in written and published materials, as well as the dance/tune card index for sound recordings up to 1995. They will be added in due course.

As with all other indexes on this website, the Dance and Tune Index is in a stage of development and will change frequently. It is also far from perfect. If you find any outright mistakes or inconsistencies, please let us know at library@efdss.org.
