What is Devon Tradition?

In 2009 the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded Wren Music a grant of £42,300 for the Devon Tradition project.

The project did the following:

  • Digitised and catalogued the Baring-Gould folk song manuscripts. These are now available on this website alongside the Take 6 collections. Digitisation was done from the original manuscripts in colour, with permission from The Baring-Gould Corporation, Plymouth libraries and Houghton Library, Harvard University.
  • Preserved the Paul Wilson audio archive by digitising over 650 reel-to-reel tapes.
  • Ran an education project which set up residencies in local communities and taught the songs back to the people living in the areas in which they were originally collected.

The project was made possible by further support from Plymouth Libraries, Devon County Council, the National Folk Music Fund, the Dartmoor Society and the Baring-Gould Corporation.
